Discovery Channel features shark research

Research on sharks and rays by graduate students working with Biological Sciences Professor Cheryl Wilga has received significant visibility in recent weeks on Daily Planet, a program of Discovery Channel/Canada. Student Anabela Maia's research on the function of shark dorsal fins was featured on Daily Planet late last month, while Jason Ramsay's study of how rays bite was featured on Daily Planet this week.

Expertly speaking

A number of URI faculty and staff have been called on by local and national reporters to comment on issues of significance in the news in the last couple weeks. For instance, the New York Times quoted URI sports psychologist John Sullivan about professional athletes and concussions; the Providence Journal featured comments by Psychology Professor Ellen Flannery-Schroeder in a story about the "winter blues;" the Westerly Sun quoted Political Science Professor Marc Hutchinson in its coverage of the protests in Egypt; and History Professor RosaMaria Pegueros was interviewed at length on WGBH radio about Hispanics in Rhode Island becoming the "minority majority." In addition Business Dean Mark Higgins, Business Professor Ed Mazze and Economics Professor Len Lardaro continue to be regularly quoted by numerous Rhode Island media about the economy and business topics.

College freshmen feeling more stress

Jason Pina, assistant vice president of Student Affairs and dean of Students was invited to discuss the recent report, "The American Freshman: National Norms Fall 2010," on The Rhode Show. The report found that the emotional health of freshmen is at an all time low. In this interview, Pina described the approach and services URI has in place to help students cope with stress.
