Commencement 2011

As many as 15,000 people gathered in Kingston, R.I. on Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22, to celebrate the achievements of the more than 3,283 undergraduate and 711 graduate students who received their degrees at the University's 125th Commencement.  Named to the 2011 TIME 100 list of the world's most influential people, Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker delivered the undergraduate commencement address.

In the News: Starting with Frank Coletta's Coffee Cup Salute on WJAR TV-10, the commencement ceremony was covered by South Kingstown Patch.com with video highlights that were then shared in the Huffington Post and other online media. All Rhode Island media outlets including the Providence Journal , WJAR TV Channel 10, WRNINarragansett Times, the South County Independent and more covered the events and accomplishments of students.

Going Social: At the same time, URI's digital and social network came of age as part of Commencement. The University tapped into many live channels for students, alumni and more to share their pride and the excitement of the weekend events. More than 1,600 people viewed the commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 22, and several hundred saw the graduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 21. URI's commencement twitter feed, hashtag #uri2011, was active throughout the day with hundreds of people sharing their excitement and positive energy with thousands. URI's Facebook page kept up with these remarks and more all through the weekend
