Arming URI Police: A Campus Discussion

The University held the first in a series of three public forums to discuss the arming of URI police officers. Many members of the University community participated, regional media covered the event and spoke with panelists, students and some faculty.

Wednesday, Oct. 9, WPRO's Dan Yorke interviewed Stephen Baker, director of Public Safety and Mary Jo Gonzales, assistant vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students about the issue and concerns of students, faculty and staff. The MyRITV interview starts at 09:32. The South County Independent and Narragansett Times reported on the forum in its Oct. 10 and 11 issues.

Tuesday, Oct. 8, The Providence Journal  the forum was the subject of a comprehensive front-page story, Public Safety Director Stephen Baker was interviewed on WPROs morning news and the topic was part of discussions later with John DePetro. Monday, Oct. 7, The Providence Journal, Channels 10, 12 and 6 attended and covered the event. RI Public Radio and WPRO radio also carried news about the forum.
