Hawaiian Island formation

A study of the geologic origin of the Hawaiian Islands by graduate student Ashton Flinders and colleagues at the University of Hawaii has generated considerable media attention. The scientists found that the island chain was formed by eruptions of lava on the volcanoes' surface -- called extrusion -- not internal emplacement of magma, as was previously thought. Reports of their findings appeared on the Huffington Post, MSN News, Archaeology News Network, Hawaii Tribune Herald, UPI, Jagran Post, and West Hawaii Today.
