Research by Human Development and Family Studies Assistant Professor Sue Adams has shown a "hidden" effect of technology -- the sleep deprivation resulting from their 24/7 use. The Chronicle of Higher Education recently reported on her findings, "Bleary-Eyed Students Can't Stop Texting, Even to Sleep, a Researcher Finds," and the story was covered by numerous other media outlets, including Princeton Review. Based on the research of Geosciences Professor and Department Chair David Fastovsky and colleagues that was written about in the Journal of Paleontology, the popular press has now been reporting on the big little find. Prochaska and First Lady Michelle Obama were honored at the Society for Public Health Education's annual meeting in Arlington, Va. Health of premature infants through adulthood

URI Nursing Professor Mary Sullivan has shared some of her latest findings in the longest running U.S. study of premature infants who were born in the 1980s. Her study has found the infants may face a greater risk of heart-health problems in adulthood. Her latest research shows that the stress response of pre-term infants produces increased levels of the hormone cortisol that becomes a mechanism underlying adult chronic diseases. As many as 15,000 people gathered in Kingston, R.I. on Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22, to celebrate the achievements of the more than 3,283 undergraduate and 711 graduate students who received their degrees at the University's 125th Commencement. Named to the 2011 TIME 100 list of the world's most influential people, Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker delivered the undergraduate commencement address.

In the News: Starting with Frank Coletta's Coffee Cup Salute on WJAR TV-10, the commencement ceremony was covered by South Kingstown Patch.com with video highlights that were then shared in the Huffington Post and other online media. The tsunami that struck Japan and elsewhere following the deadly earthquake this week put URI experts on the front lines with the media. Thanks to work underway due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the University discovered a set of murals that had been created by Providence artist Gino Conti (1900-1983) for a Works Progress Administration project during the Great Depression. Media were invited to the Edwards Hall (c. 1928) construction site to see the works being removed and preserved and to interview URI Professor Ron Onorato, an art historian and Director of Campus Planning and Design Thomas Frisbie-Fulton. The works had been covered during building renovations in the 1960s. According to the largest clinical trial with couples to date, couples who had systematic client feedback methods incorporated into their therapy sessions were 46.2 percent less likely to wind up divorced or separated. URI Human Development and Family Studies Professor Jacqueline Sparks conducted and co-authored this study that shows how therapists can greatly increase the chances that struggling couples will stay together.
